We have recently added the new PROFOTO D2 1000 studio flash to our equipment at the BJP Photography studio in Letchworth. It is capable of freezing action at 1/63000th of a second. We decided to put it to the test by using it to capture this year’s BJP ‘Frozen’ Christmas card. We gathered together various archetypal Christmas ingredients – clementines, baubles, cinnamon sticks, fir branches and, most importantly, a dram of scotch on the rocks (yeah right!) and placed them on a wipe clean surface on top of a trampette. Tracey put on her Health and Safety PPE, (back to front overalls and safety glasses!) and we got to work.
The Tech stuff for the photography
I set up a background of black velvet and my Nikon D810 with a 105mm lens at a safe distance. Next I placed the D2 to the right front of the subject with a soft box on it so as not to produce any harsh shadows. From the rear left of the subject, I used a Profoto D1 1000 as a back light through a honey comb so as not to flare light into the lens. The D1 has a slower flash duration than the D2. This was to leave a blurred trail behind some of the frozen subjects to suggest movement. Then with a “1,2,3, GO!” Tracey thumped the under side of the trampette, I pressed the shutter release and we captured the flight of our Christmas particulates,
Now I can’t lie. There were a lot of takes involved to get to this result. Unfortunately several baubles, mince pies and crackers were harmed during the making of this card! Many didn’t make it to the final image and yes; the crystal glass is no more but I’m sure you’ll agree, they gave their all for a worthy cause.
Tracey – ready for destruction!
